A first step for criminal justice reform

This week, Congress and President Donald Trump has shown solidarity by passing The First Step Act, a bipartisan criminal justice bill that will provide sentencing and prison reforms.

The First Step Act will curb several mandatory minimums for low-level drug crimes, providing judges with more discretion over individual cases. The bill also aims to eliminate the three-strike rule. The First Step Act provides increases in educational and professional programming to reduce recidivism rates.

We are thankful for the ongoing efforts of U.S. policymakers to achieve these criminal justice reforms. Although the First Step Act is a step in the right direction, we must continue to urge Congress to pass legislation that would overhaul the entire system. But for now, let us celebrate this first step!
